Simple ways to reduce you central heating Costs.
-
Don't leave your central heating switched on when
you don't need it. Background heating is only needed when you are out if the
temperature is freezing, or if you are away a few days. If you have your
central heating off for an extra hour a day, you can save over £30 in an
year. So use use your timer or programmer save on gas bills.
-
Do fit aluminium foil behind any radiators fitted
against outside walls to reflect heat back into the room. Ordinary kitchen
foil will do, but you can buy specially designed foil from DIY stores.
-
Do fit a 3 to 5 inches shelves just above the
radiators to deflect warm air towards the middle of the room instead of
letting it warm up the wall.
-
If you feel hot, do think about turning your
heating down. One degree C down can cut up to 10% of your central heating
bill.
-
Don't let the curtains hang in front of radiators.
-
Fit draught proofing- Block off any chimneys that
are not in use, seal the gap between floorboards and skirting board with
newspaper or mastic sealant. Seal the gap between window / door frames and
external wall with mastic sealant.
-
Cold air draught through the letter box, key hole
and gap around the front door will make the hall way cold enough to activate
the room thermostat in the hall. The room thermostat will turn on the boiler
and the whole house will overheat in windy days.
-
Nearly half of your heating bill is for hot water.
So using hot water economically will reduce the gas bill.
-
To prevent heat loss from the hot water cylinder,
lag the hot water cylinder.
-
Fix dripping taps especially hot ones, In only one
day, a dripping hot water tap can waste enough water to fill a bath.
-
Use shower instead of a bath.
